Yes, you’ve read it right…
But you might wonder, what does the ‘Seven Seas’ have to do with Leadership?
The Success or Failure of an Organization or a Company is totally dependent on the capabilities of the Leaders…
Just as the rise and fall of a Ship traversing the great seas is totally dependent on the capabilities of it’s Captain…
As I am writing this post, it dawned upon me that becoming the Great Leader that you want to be is really more of a journey than a destination…
You don’t just wake up one morning and realize that you are a great leader.
Leadership requires that you gain the Respect from your followers.
And this Respect is earned.
It is not given freely.
You must work hard in order to gain the respect of your followers.
Becoming the Great Leader that you desire to be is like a Quest that you have make…
And this quest will lead you through rough times, bad weather, and great waves of positive as well as negative thoughts.
Here are the Seven C’s You Need to Becoming The Great Leader You Desire To Be:
This is what defines you as a person.
Character spells out what you believe in, your values.
How you, as a Leader, deal with the nuts and bolts in your life tells many things about your character.
Instead, these circumstances will Reveal your Character.
Your character will dictate how you will react to positive and negative situations. The adversity that you are facing in your life is like a cross roads where you will make your choice…
Choice which will show your Strength in Character, or your willingness to make compromise.
Remember, every time you choose character, you will become stronger, even if your choice lead to negative circumstances. What do you need to know about character?
1. Character is more than talk.
2. Talent is a Gift, but Character is a Choice.
3. Character Brings Lasting Success with People.
2. Charisma: Uplift and Edify the Other Person…
Most people think of Charisma as something mystical, almost undefinable.
I thought, before, that Charisma is a quality that comes at birth or not at all.
Boy, was I wrong.
You and I can develop charisma, that’s for sure.
“But how can you have Charisma?”, you might ask.
You just have to be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are making them feel good about you.
Charisma, is the ability to draw people to you and like other character traits, it can be developed.
How do you develop Charisma?
First, You have to Love Life.
People will be drawn to you because of you natural love for life.
When you say “Love Life”, it means being passionate about the things that inspires you.
This passion will then inspire people you come in contact with.
And eventually, they will be drawn to you.
Second, Place A “10” On Every Person’s Head.
Believe that all people are destined for greatness.
It is only time that separates the successful ones from the not so successful ones, yet.
By believing authentically, that a person is destined for greatness,
people will want to be near your space because they can feel a positive energy surrounding you.
Third, Give People Hope.
What this world lack right now are people who are willing to give hope to those who are feeling hopeless.
Go ask yourself, “To which person will you be drawn to?
The one who just shrugs you around?
Or someone who is authentically willing to help and guide you achieve your dreams?
Of course, you will choose the one who can help you achieve your dreams, right?
This natural feeling of being magnetized to another person because you feel valued and a positive energy is Charisma.
3. Commitment: Will Completely Separate You From The Dreamers…
People will not follow uncommitted leaders.
That is a fact.
What is Commitment?
To each person, commitment may mean different things…
If you’re a Boxer,
Commitment to you may be getting off the mat one time more than you’ve been knocked down…
If you’re a Marathoner,
Commitment to you may mean running another ten miles when your strength is gone…
If you’re a Soldier,
Commitment to you is going over the hill, not knowing what’s waiting for you on the other side…
If you’re a Missionary,
Commitment to you is saying good-bye to your own comfort to make life better for others…
If you’re a Leader,
Commitment to you is all that and more because everyone you lead is depending on you…
True commitment inspires people.
It shows them that you have conviction.
4. Competence: You Can’t Teach What You Don’t Have…
As John Maxwell said,
“Competence goes beyond words.
It’s the leader’s ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that
others know that you know how – and know that they want to follow you.”
Do you know someone whom you admire because he is so competent at what his doing?
Just like you, I also have people in my life whose commitment I admire.
These people are not great athletes or celebrities.
They are ordinary people like you and me.
The only difference is that these people have decided that they are going to commit to their followers.
If you are really serious in becoming a great leaders, you must focus on developing yourself from the inside out.
Your development form a big chunk of your commitment to your people.
How can you guide your people if you yourself don’t know what you are doing?
It will be like a blind leading the blind.
Therefore, you must commit to develop yourself further.
Improve your Competence in the main tasks that you are doing..
This way, you’re not just setting a good example to your followers in terms of personal development,
You also develop your skills and capability to better lead your people.
If you want to cultivate Competence, here are 5 things you need to do:
First, Show Up Every Day.
This means, being available to your people even if there are Nuts & Bolts for your business or your life.
Second, Keep Improving.
The best investment you can ever make is the investment you make on yourself.
You have to be Pro-Actively searching for your own Growth and Development.
Third, Excellence in Execution.
Always strive to be better than yesterday.
Do not be content with what you have right now.
Fourth, Give More Than is Expected of You.
By giving more than is expected of you, you are creating an Abundant Mentality in you.
This will also resonate with your followers and they will model what you are doing.
This way, you accomplish two things, you create a super Committed Team, you stretch yourself towards achieving more.
Lastly, Inspire Others.
Your Vision of the Future will be your guiding light.
This Vision will also be the guiding light of your followers.
This Vision will Inspire them to perform regardless of the circumstances facing them.
Remember, people will follow you not because of where you’ve been, but because of where you’re going.
When you think about people who are competent, you’re really considering only three types of people;
1. Those who can see what needs to happen.
2. Those who can make it happen.
3. Those who can make things happen when it really counts.
“Educators make something simple and make it complicated.
Communicators take something complicated and make it simple.”
– John Maxwell
Great Leaders are great communicators.
And in order to be the Great Leader that you aspire to become, you need to communicate your message to your followers.
How can people follow you if at first, your vision is not clear to them simply because you were not able to communicate the message well.
The success of your business, your marriage, even your life, depends solely on how well you communicate to others.
People will not follow you if they don’t know what you want or where you are going.
Effective Communication is a very important skill that you need to develop.
How do you start building on your communication skills?
Simplify Your Message.
Do not over-complicate things.
You see, people have the natural tendency to complicate instructions or directions.
Based on my past 2 decades experience in the Sales Profession, this is happening almost 90% of the time.
People are not able to accomplish a certain task simply because the goal and the how-to’s were not communicated effectively.
If you’ll ask these people, they will just tell you that the instructions are not clear.
The instructions are complicated.
When you are giving out directions, always follow the 1-2-3 format.
1. Explain what you want your people to do
2. Demonstrate what you want them to do
3. Let them practice while you are giving Feedback.
Look The Person In The Eye.
Whenever you communicate with someone, it is always best to look him straight in the eye.
In communication, what you want to accomplish is not only to deliver the message but most importantly,
to help your people connect to the message that you are delivering.
Constant eye contact when communicating is vital in establishing connection with your people.
Show The Truth.
As a leader, you want to be authentic and not false.
Always do your best to communicate and show only the truth.
People will know if you are just goofing around or if you are telling the truth.
This part of communicating to your people will truly spell out your character.
Seek A Response.
Do not leave the conversation without closure.
Closure meaning drafting the necessary action steps for you and your people to follow.
This will then be your guide in following up progress of whatever it is that your agreed upon.
And when you develop action steps, do not fall into the trap of thinking that the more action steps to take, the better.
You see, based on research, the most number of steps that a person can follow effectively is three (3).
So keep your action steps to three (3) MAX.
If it is more than three (3), the mind perceive it as complicated therefore, there’s a less chance of accomplishing the task effectively.
Remember, a leader must get things done through others, therefore the leader must have the ability to inspire and motivate, guide and direct, and listen.
It is only through effective communication that you, the leader are able to cause others to internalize your vision and connect these with his own.
Thus was stated by Woodrow Wilson. If you want to become a great leader, you must learn to touch the heart of your followers before asking for a hand.
But before you can touch the heart of your follower, you have to know what’s in it.
And you learn it by listening. If you are unwilling to listen to your followers, you will lose your connection with your people and you will not be able to influence your people to achieve a common objective. This is far too common among poor leaders.
Your people are clamoring for your attention in the same way that you wanted attention from your people.
And as you think about how to spend your listening time…
Keep in mind that you have two purposes for listening;
1. To connect with your people
2. To Learn from your peopleAnd for your to Learn, you must keep your ear open to your Followers, your Customers, your Competitors and your Mentors.
Go ahead, ask yourself,
“When was the last time I really paid close attention to people and what they have to say?”
“Was I able to make a connection with my people?”
“Was I listening with my Heart more than with my Head?”
Do more than just grab facts.
Start listening not only for words, but also for feelings, meanings and undercurrents.
And only then, can you really develop the connection you need to influence your people.
“Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities…
because it is the quality which guarantees all others.”
– Winston Churchill
Have you ever wondered why some organizations are showing significant progress than others?
Like I said, everything rises and falls with leadership.
Whenever you see significant progress in any organization, you know that the leader made courageous decisions.
Being in a leadership position doesn’t give you courage, but courage can definitely give you a leadership position.
As you approach any tough decisions that challenges you, realize the following truths about courage:
1. Courage Begins From The Inside-Out.
2. Courage Is Doing The Right Things and Making Things Right.
3. Courage from A Leader will Inspire Commitment From Your Followers.
4. Your can expand your territory in proportion to the amount of courage you have.
Every circumstance that you face in your life journey more or less trains you.
These Nuts & Bolts give you strength, courage and confidence.
There will come a time that you will just really stop to look fear in the face.
And how do you tend to handle fear?
You embrace it?
For in embracing fear, you stretch your learning experiences.
They become part of your daily life.
Do not ever think of retreating back to your Comfort Zone for you will never be successful.
Remember, your success, as a leaders, as a person lies outside of your comfort zone.
Continue to stretch yourself to expand your territory.
How must you change to develop a spirit of courage in your life?
Everything rises and falls on leadership.
And leadership truly develops from the inside out.
If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside,
you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside.
People will want to follow you.
And when that happens, you will be able to tackle anything in this world.
God Bless You, My Friend.
