What separates leadership theorist from successful leaders who lead effectively in the real world?
But how do you effectively influence your followers?Let me start with a quick story:
This is a story about a Special Olympic meet.
These competitors are special people who have made it to the finals.
As the competitors are lining up and getting ready at the starting line, one of the runners,
Howard, stopped and looked up.
He looked at the clouds and was completely mesmerized with it.
In the background, you can hear the audience all shouting,
“No! Get ready! The race is about to start! Get ready!!!”
But Howard didn’t waiver.
The other participants noticed Howard and started looking up.
They too were mesmerized by the beautiful cloud formations.
They saw different shapes too, dinosaurs, elephants, airplanes.
And as they were looking up, then the gun went off.
The race just started, and all the runners were just standing there looking up.
The crowd shouted,
“Run! The race has started! Run!!!
Howard suddenly realized that the gun went off and the race had started.
He started running.
He reached 40 yards of the 50 yard dash.
Then suddenly, he stopped.
Howard turned around and looked back at the starting line.
He saw all his competitors still looking up.
Then he yelled at them shouting,
“Come on! Come on! The race has begun!!”
He started clapping and cheering all his competitors to come on.
Sure enough, all the other racers started running and Howard was there cheering them on.
10 yards straight from the finish line.
Howard was clapping and cheering them on as they were running towards him.
And, one by one, the other competitors went pass by him.
As soon as the last competitor has run him by,
Howard started running again and finished the race last.
In the stands, was a Sports Illustrated writer watching everything that has transpired.
After the race, the writer went to Howard and gave him a Medal.
The writer said, “I can’t believe what you just did.
I’ve covered sports all my life and this is one of the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. ”
Then the writer asked Howard the following,
“Why did you do what you just did?
Why did you not run the race?
Why did you not finish the race?
Why did you stopped at 40 yards and cheered all the other competitors pass you?
Howard said, “A race is not any fun if you’re running it alone.”
You see, in order to become a leaders who creates massive influence to your followers,

Leadership is not about finishing the race on top;

Leaders are “Creators Of Growth And Learning”
As a Leader, you must always focus on being a Creator of Growth And Learning to your people.
This means that you must strive to be always ahead of your team when it comes to Learning and Growth.
You must focus on your own mindset and skill set development.
In the same way, you must guide your people towards their own journey of growth and development, both in mindset & skill set.
Your ultimate mission as a leader is to facilitate the transformation of your people for them to become the best version of themselves.
One of the keys things you need to know about Leadership is Vision.
Look, people will follow you as a Leader , not because of where you came from but because of where you’re going.
As a Leader, you must have a Clear Vision on where you want to lead your people.
You must also share that Vision with your people and guide them on how their own vision connects with your overall Vision.

Remember, Your candle loses nothing when it lights other candles.
Leadership is not only about teaching people on how to achieve a specific goal…
It is, most importantly, about empowering people to become great Leaders themselves.
Leadership is like lighting a Candle and uses that candle to help illuminate what was hidden in the dark.
A True Leader is never threatened by the abilities and accomplishments of your people.

You know that the success of our people is our success too.
Above All, Leadership is ALL About being available to be of service to your people.
As Leaders, you must understand that the PEOPLE is the primary reason for being a Leader.
The basis of Great Leadership is Honorable Character and Selfless Service.
Let me leave you a thought from one of the famous authors, Eugene B. Habecker:
“The true leader serves. Serves people.
Serves their best interest and in so doing, will not always be popular, may not always impress.
But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern rather than the desire for personal glory, they are willing to pay the price.”
As Leaders, we are called to pay the price for our people.
All because of a deeper realization that it is not about winning the race alone…
It is all about finishing the race together.
God bless us all.
